finding family and a fresh start
Kathy arrived at Pickens County Shelter of Hope in May 2020, finding family among us after losing her home when her husband entered a nursing home. In her 70s, she became the shelter’s "mother," offering warmth and support. After her husband's passing, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we helped her secure death benefits, and by October 2020, she moved into her own home. Today, she’s thriving and continues to support our shelter.

a final home for Mr. berry
Mr. Berry came to Pickens County Shelter of Hope through the Pickens County Sheriff's Office after being found wandering the streets, lost and without a safe place to go. Living in an uninhabitable camper, he showed signs of severe dementia, and our team worked with Pickens County DSS to secure him a place in an assisted living facility. As his health declined, he was hospitalized, and sadly, he passed away with no known family. Because our shelter was the last home he knew, we were entrusted with his funeral arrangements, and his ashes now rest in our foyer—a lasting reminder that, for many, Pickens County Shelter of Hope is the only family they have.

determined to rebuild
Chris arrived at Pickens County Shelter of Hope on April 4th 2024, determined to get back on his feet. He secured a job at a car wash and rode his scooter 2.7 miles to work each day, saving every penny. With support from our staff and residents, he moved into his own brand-new apartment on October 29th. Now, he’s not only rebuilding his life but also reuniting with his family
